Modern Pirate: A new series of self-promotion pieces by Calgary photographer Dan Bannister

Today’s feature photos are brought to us by Calgary photographer Dan Bannister. Bannister had been thinking about creating a series of pirate themed images for some time to use as promotional pieces, but he didn’t want to just shoot portraits of someone dressed up as a pirate.

I started to think it would be funny to create images of a pirate at home using modern technology and the “Modern Pirate” series was born.

Bannister knew the shots were going to require some extensive post-production, so he enlisted the help of Calgary retoucher Robyn Jamieson. “Robyn’s retouching skills are phenomenal,” says Bannister. “I knew she’d do a great job.”

He also went on a mission to find just the right props for the set and eventually cobbled together all the necessary pieces. Most of the elements for the set were shot one at a time and were later composited into the finished images. After the sets were captured, the “pirate” came in to the studio and Bannister photographed him with the various pieces of technology he wanted in the final shots.
