Anybody else see the article about a Canadian born photographer named Gregory Colbert in Saturday's Toronto Star (Feb 19/05)?

If you're like me you have probably never heard of this guy. In fact, very few people have ever heard of him. His work has been exhibited in very few places, and never in Canada. If you're also like me and have been struggling for awhile now to make a decent buck from photography, you probably read the article in slack-jawed amazement at what this guy has been able to achieve while working in virtual obscurity.

According the article, Colbert's images sell for "$500,000 or more, a lot more... making him by far the richest living Canadian artist - and the most ambitious."

Ambitious is putting it mildly when you consider that he has also created the largest nomadic structure in history exclusively to exhibit his work around the world. The gallery, which is completely mobile and occupies over 4,000 square metres, will premier in New York next month. It will then be dismantled and transported to Los Angeles, Beijing, Tokyo and Vatican City.

For more information you can read the the original Toronto Star article here. You must be registered to view the article, but registration is free.

Hi Andrew:
As a matter of fact, I did and it was interesting to see the overnight success story inferences in the telling. Not that Peter doesn't know the truth, he most certainly does, but rather the people referenced in the article seem to leave one with that inference.
I can only imagine the dues he has actually paid, before becoming the darling of a select few of the "uber riche" who now allow him to persue his vision, unhindered by the boundaries that enclose so many of the rest of us. It just goes to show you, that there is hope and there are ways, as long as we are willing to search and survive!

Cheers,
Peter

I have heard of him too. I saw his works for sale at LAPhoto and they were incredible prints. Very stunning.

Art.
