I'm new here and just wanted to introduce myself to you.

I started in the photography industry in 1974 as a lab technician and eventually became lab manager until the lab closed in 1992.

I started shooting wedding in 1980 and still do 5 or 6 a year. But my real forte is technical photography. Since 1990 I have worked for several insurance companies photographing jewelry, coin and stamp collection for appraisals. Almost exclusively macro photography. Also used to do separations and dye transfer printing. Still have a darkroom and still shoot in 4 x 5 for my own enjoyment.

Frank Ockenfels III was teaching a class in Palm Springs, at the Photo Festival, and I wanted to do something new with my portraiture so I took it.
It was great. For those of you who don't know who I'm on about, his website is here:
Here are a couple of images from little old me...

Is there any members who are, or who know a shooter doing shoots for real estate listings?

I'm considering dipping my toes into the market, but would like to see what the lay of the land is first.

The last time I spoke with a real estate agent (about 4 years ago), she indicated that the majority of agents in my area, use their personal point-and-shoot cameras for all their listings.

Nobody hires photographers or stagers/stylists (at least out of her office).

In my area, I could see a strong market for a talented and driven photographer, especially if they could team up with a skilled stager or interior stylist. Some of the cottages in the area are averaging $600,000. You'd think a real estate agent who is trying to make their commission, would want to improve their potential for flipping a property as quick as possible. Good photos are the way to go They could work the photo bill into the sale fee/commission.

Any thoughts?

ABOUT ME
I'm a wedding and portrait photographer based in Toronto, Ontario.

WHY I'M HERE
I love the idea of collaborating with the creative community. An opportunity to have the rich technical photography conversations and brainstorms that typically put our friends and family to sleep!

Within one month of joining Canphoto I ended up having an amazing online brainstorm with a talented commercial photographer based in Montreal. We bounced some different lighting setups off each other and in the end he shared some beautiful photos with me. This is why I think a photography community is so important. (Thank you Andrew Ross for Canphoto!)

I love learning and good conversation so if you have techniques to share I'm all ears. Or if you're new to the game or haven't tried a particular technique, use me as a resource. Always happy to help!

MY FAV GEAR
I won't bore you with the full inventory list, but below is my go to gear

Canon 5DMKII

Canon 24mm F1.4 L

Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS L

Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro

Canon 15mm F2.8 Fisheye

Hi

I am hoping someone can clarify a question regarding model releases. I do understand the importance of having them for commercial / promotional work.

Does a photographer have the right to submit a photo into a local photo/art exhibtion without a model release? This photo was taken of a performer two years ago at a public event. At the time I did make the attempt to find out who they were in order to gain permission, but had no luck. The photo will never be for sale, so there is no commercial gain.

Taking this question one step further, can I as a photographer publicly exhibit street photography containing unknown individuals without a model release?

Thanks for any help with this one.

Hi,

I'm everyone!

This is all very new to me, and I'm looking forward to getting more involved with the photo community. As a freelancer most of the time you're either living out of a suit case or recovering from a long out of town assignment with the result of being a loner.
Happily, I'm now semi-retired and really enjoying the freedom of doing more what I like with photography and this includes mentoring, workshops, fine art, shooting for 2 books.

B&W film has lured me back into the darkroom along with the adventures on the digital side.

All in all the stuff is darn good.

Best to all!

Hi
I am Carolyn and I live in rural SE Alberta. I am a student of photography and over the past 14 months I am being mentored by an amazing Canadian Photographer (Crombie McNeill)

Today, I now have a passion for natural low light bw photography in both film and digital. Of the many areas of interest, Portraits and Photojournalism are the top two for me. Every so often I sneak off for landscapes that have old trucks, barns or water in them. (backup passion)

Really looking forward to meeting many of you here.
