Canadian photographers submit stunning images to National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest 2012

This photo by Ottawa photographer Michelle Valberg was taken on the ice near Arctic Bay, Nunavut. As far as she knows, it is the highest latitude passenger flight on a hot air balloon ever. It is one iceberg but looks like two. (© Michelle Valberg/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

The 24th annual National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest has just wrapped up, and judges will soon be selecting the winners. There were more than 12,000 images submitted from around the world and these are a few of the stunning entries submitted by Canadian photographers.

Alessandro Cancian/National Geographic

Alessandro Cancian discovered this road while driving around the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada, and says he makes sure to go back on any occasion he has to visit this cathedral space made by the trees. (© Alessandro Cancian/National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest)

Matthew Thornton/National Geographic

While working as a fishing guide in Tofino, British Columbia Matthew Thornton had this humpback calf jump no more than 10 feet away from the boat. 'It was quite an experience to see something completely airborne so close to the boat', says Thonton. 'The lucky thing was I got the photo I submitted. It was an amazing day'.
