Vancouver photographer brings plastic to life with fantastic Living Dolls series of photos

Hayden Wood Barbie and Ken

Hayden Wood wondered what Barbie and Ken would look like if they were real people, and the Vancouver photographer has done an amazing job of breathing life into plastic with a fantastic series of images called “Living Dolls”. The results are very surreal, and sometimes a bit creepy, but Wood’s photography and retouching do a wonderful job of merging live models into the plastic world of Barbie and Ken. The photography and models are great, but the retouching is the real star in these photos. This is not surprising since Wood spent six years working as a retoucher and graphic artist for the advertising agency Ogilvy in his native New Zealand, before moving to Vancouver in 2001 to “explore new places and grow as a photographer”. You can see more of Wood’s portrait, fashion and retouching work on his website: haydenwoodphotography.com/ (These images have been around the web for awhile, so some readers may have seen them before. However, I just discovered them yesterday and I really wanted to share the work of a talented new Canadian photographer.)

I find these pics fascinating and “creepy” at the same time. I am not sure how to express my thoughts properly, but most people I’ve sent the link to seem to feel the same. Terrific work.
